Calvary

“Even though the cross is empty, He is still the Light Of The World”

Back in 1974, when I was in my early twenties I was having a rebirth in my faith. My grandmother, Lydia Newman, asked me to create a picture of Calvary to hang at her local nursing home, during this period of my life. Being busy at college, I remember scribbling swiftly the three crosses silhouetted against the hills. The chalk swirled across the blue velour surface!
Little did I know this drawing would have such a huge impact on so many lives! When my grandmother brought it home, she hung it at the entrance of her foyer. People would enter her home, expressing their feelings about the drawing. Many could see the image of Christ subtly appear in the clouds above the middle cross. This was the work of the Holy Spirit, because I did not plan the outcome. Divine intervention had played a role in this creation! As the years have passed, the chalk has shifted, so this artwork continues to change its appearance. I, personally, have difficulty seeing the image of Christ now. But, the one characteristic of this drawing that is constant is the light beaming from the sky through the billowing clouds. In our darkest hour we need to be reminded of the Light of Christ.
The original Chalk drawing has been a comfort to several of my family members. In 1984, my grandmother and mother died within three months of each other. My father came to me and requested to hang this picture in his home till he died, because his heart was laden with heavy grief. I was to get it back when he died. But when he died in May 2002, my stepmother requested to leave it, for a while. Several months later, she finally let me have the drawing of Calvary back.
This drawing has been healing for my loved ones. It is a reminder that He is The Light of the World!
